Journey to Waikiki

The drive from the airport to Waikiki showcases Oahu's diverse landscapes, taking you from the bustling streets of Honolulu to the tranquil beauty of the Pacific Ocean, with the iconic silhouette of Diamond Head looming in the distance. Waikiki itself is a vibrant hub where the spirit of Aloha is alive in every smile and greeting.

Accommodations in Waikiki

View from a room at a Waikiki resortThroughout my trips to Waikiki, I've enjoyed stays at both the welcoming Castle Ocean Resort Hotel Waikiki and the Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel. Both accommodations offer comfortable and relatively budget-friendly options for travelers.

For those seeking a touch of luxury, I recommend exploring the resort guide located here.

Travel Tip: ABC Stores are a staple in Hawaii. These convenience stores offer everything from souvenirs and snacks to beach essentials like sunscreen and towels, making them a one-stop shop for travelers.

It's a true melting pot of cultures set against a backdrop of stunning natural beauty.

Culinary Journey: After a pleasant stroll along Kalakaua Avenue, we opted for dinner at Sansei Seafood Restaurant & Sushi Bar. This dining experience was a voyage across Hawaii's vibrant culinary scene, marrying traditional Japanese methods with the freshest local ingredients.

Evening Entertainment: Don't miss the hula dancers who perform along the beach at sunset. It's a mesmerizing display of Hawaii's cultural heritage, telling the stories of the islands through enchanting dance and music.

Ascending Diamond Head

A hiker looks out over Waikiki from the summit of Diamond HeadA hike up Diamond Head Crater, known in Hawaiian as Lēʻahi, is a rite of passage for visitors. It offers a tangible connection to the island's volcanic roots and breathtaking natural beauty.

The Hawaiian name Lēʻahi means "brow of the tuna" and was given to the landmark for its distinct ridgeline, which resembles the dorsal fin of a tuna fish.

The path to the peak presents challenges, notably a steep ascent that tests your resolve. Yet, the promise of panoramic views from the summit propels hikers forward. The reward far outweighs the effort. Read more here.

Travel Tip: As of 2022, all out-of-state visitors must make an online reservation to hike Diamond Head. Be sure to book your time slot in advance. Proper footwear, water, and sun protection are essential for a comfortable hike.

A Day at the Honolulu Zoo

A zebra grazing at the Honolulu ZooAfter the adrenaline-fueled ascent of Diamond Head, the Honolulu Zoo offers a serene counterpoint. Located at the edge of Waikiki, the zoo is a vibrant portal into the diverse wildlife of the tropics and beyond, all set against Hawaii's verdant landscapes.

The Honolulu Zoo is the only zoo in the United States founded by a reigning monarch, King David Kalākaua, who opened the park in 1877 to house his personal collection of exotic birds and animals.

The zoo unfolds as a journey across varied habitats, from the African savanna to dense tropical rainforests. The bird sanctuary is a particular highlight, a riot of colors and sounds with exotic inhabitants from across the globe. Read about the Zoo here.

Manoa Falls and Bamboo Forest

A dense and serene bamboo forest on the trail to Manoa FallsOur quest to uncover Oahu's natural marvels led us to the enchanting trail to Manoa Falls, guided by Oahu Nature Tours. This expedition promised a voyage through Hawaii's lush beauty, culminating in the awe-inspiring vision of the 150-foot waterfall.

The journey took us through various ecosystems, but it was the bamboo forest that captivated us completely. Walking into this lush sanctuary felt like stepping into a revered space, with towering bamboo stalks moving in a gentle, rhythmic dance.

Traveler Tip: The Manoa Valley is a rainforest, so the trail to the falls is often wet and muddy, even on sunny days. Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes that you don't mind getting dirty.

Snorkeling in Hanauma Bay

Overhead view of the crescent-shaped Hanauma BayOur exploration led us to the pristine waters of Hanauma Bay, a nature preserve renowned for its flourishing coral reefs and diverse marine life. Formed within a volcanic cone, this stunning "Curved Bay" is a haven for both snorkelers and aquatic animals.

A TripAdvisor user commented, "Absolutely stunning, but you MUST book your reservation online, sometimes days in advance. Don't just show up. The mandatory educational video is great for teaching respect for the reef."

Joining a guided tour, we immersed ourselves in the bay's underwater marvels. The clear, calm water allowed us to see vibrant coral and countless species of tropical fish, including the famous Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa. Dive into the adventure here.

With no prior experience but a heart full of excitement, I joined Surf Hawaii Surf School, renowned for its beginner-friendly approach. Their group lesson on a secluded beach north of Honolulu was the perfect invitation to dive into the waves. Read about our surfing lesson here.

This all-encompassing experience transported us across the Pacific through a rich tapestry of cultural festivities and interactive activities.

The Polynesian Cultural Center features six authentic island villages representing Hawaii, Samoa, Aotearoa (New Zealand), Fiji, Tahiti, and Tonga, allowing visitors to experience a cross-section of Pacific cultures in one place.

The day culminated in the spectacular Alii Luau, a grand feast with traditional food and entertainment that vividly brought the heritage of the islands to life. Read the full review here.

Ala Moana Center Dining and Shopping

The open-air courtyard of the Ala Moana CenterOur family visit to Ala Moana Center in Honolulu offered a vibrant mix of culinary delights, shopping, and cultural entertainment. A standout experience was the conveyor belt sushi, which allowed us to sample fresh bites in a fun, interactive way.
