Willamette Valley, wine, flowers, and nature's beauty
The Willamette Valley is a lush region nestled between three mountain ranges. Stretching 150 miles, the valley is fed by the Willamette River and its many tributaries. This fertile terrain is not only the agricultural heart of Oregon but also its cultural center. Approximately 70 percent of the state population lives here, including those in Portland and Salem.
Interesting Fact: The Willamette Valley is home to over 700 wineries and is globally recognized as one of the premier regions for producing Pinot Noir.
The combination of cool climate and volcanic soil makes this region a paradise for viticulture. Beyond the grapes, you will find vibrant flower farms, such as the famous dahlia fields near Canby, which paint the valley in brilliant colors every summer.

The Wine Country Adventure
After a morning of exploring the nearby waterfalls, transitioning into the serene wine country is a perfect way to spend the afternoon. We joined Evergreen Escapes for their specialized tour, led by author and guide Adam Sawyer. The tour provides an effortless way to visit multiple high quality wineries without the stress of driving.
Traveler Tip: Many wineries in the Willamette Valley now require advance reservations for tastings. Always check their websites or call ahead before visiting.
Our first stop was Coelho Winery, where we enjoyed a picnic lunch sourced from a local Portland eatery. While the Pinot Noir was light and approachable, the atmosphere of the vineyard set a wonderful tone for the day. All mentioned wineries, including Coelho, Brooks, and Winter's Hill, are currently open for visitors.
A Guided Tasting Experience
At Brooks Wines, we were treated to a deep dive into the nuances of local viticulture. Our expert host, Gerry, shared the fascinating history of the winery and taught us how to identify the subtle notes in each glass. This educational approach added a layer of appreciation to the tasting.
User Comment: Brooks Wines has an incredible story and the views from their tasting room are unmatched. The Riesling was a surprise favorite! Source: Yelp Review by WineSeeker_OR.
We concluded our journey at Winter's Hill Winery. This estate is unique for its integrated farm approach, offering not just excellent wine, but also locally produced hazelnuts, honey, and chocolates. It was the perfect ending to a day that showcased the best of Oregon's bounty.
