New England Aquarium: A Marine Adventure in Boston
Located at 1 Long Wharf, the New England Aquarium is a must-visit destination for families, marine enthusiasts, and curious minds. With its innovative four-level design, the aquarium offers an immersive experience of the wonders of the aquatic world.
Highlights of the Aquarium
🐠 Giant Ocean Tank
At the heart of the aquarium stands the Giant Ocean Tank, a four-story cylindrical exhibit holding 200,000 gallons of saltwater. This Caribbean coral reef habitat is home to a diverse array of marine life, including eels, barracuda, sea turtles, cownose rays, and hundreds of colorful reef fish. A notable resident is Myrtle, a green sea turtle who has been at the aquarium since 1970. Visitors can enjoy daily feeding dives at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
🐧 Penguin Colony
Surrounding the base of the Giant Ocean Tank is the Penguin Colony, home to about 50 penguins, including African and southern rockhopper species. Each penguin wears a unique bracelet for identification—females on the right wing and males on the left. Daily presentations occur Monday through Friday at 2:00 p.m. and on weekends at 11:00 a.m., with feedings at 9:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

🦈 Shark and Ray Touch Tank
The Trust Family Foundation Shark and Ray Touch Tank is the largest of its kind on the East Coast. Visitors can gently interact with cownose rays, Atlantic rays, and epaulette sharks in a mangrove-themed environment. Educators are present to provide information and ensure respectful interactions. The exhibit opens at 9:30 a.m. and closes 15 minutes before the aquarium's closing time.
🌊 Marine Mammal Center
Located at the rear of the aquarium, the Marine Mammal Center houses California sea lions and northern fur seals. This open-air exhibit allows visitors to observe these marine mammals as they swim and play. Training sessions and feedings are conducted regularly, offering insights into their behaviors and care.
🌿 Amazon Rainforest
This exhibit transports visitors to the lush Amazonian environment, featuring species such as red-bellied piranhas, poison dart frogs, anacondas, and electric eels. The vibrant displays highlight the diversity and complexity of rainforest ecosystems.
🎬 Simons Theatre
Adjacent to the main building is the Simons Theatre, which offers 3D and 4D films that complement the aquarium experience.
During our visit, we watched a 4D film about dolphins and rescue efforts on Cape Cod. While the 3D effects were engaging, the movie lacked additional 4D sensory effects.
Note that accessing the theater requires a brief outdoor walk. Make sure to save your tickets to re-enter the main building.
