Catalina Island

A picturesque view of Catalina Island's Avalon BeachCatalina Island is just a short boat ride from Los Angeles or Orange counties, yet it feels worlds away in terms of ambiance and charm. You can easily imagine yourself on a Mediterranean island rather than in California.

Visiting the island today, it's hard to believe that it was once home to Native American tribes and later served as a beef ranch. Catalina's development into a tourist destination happened in waves. The person with the greatest influence on the island’s development was chewing-gum magnate William Wrigley Jr. He purchased the majority of the island around 1919 and began significant improvements.

Biking Yosemite

One of the most pleasant ways to experience Yosemite Valley is to hop on your bike and follow one of the winding bike trails. If you did not bring your own bike you can rent one from the many rental places at Yosemite or outside of Yosemite.

Point Loma Food Tour

Point Loma Food Tour - Harbor My wife and I recently enjoyed a delightful Food and Culture Tour in Point Loma, near San Diego. The private tour gave us a personalized experience and was led by Blair, a knowledgeable and friendly guide who made the day memorable.

Our journey began at Tunaville Market and Grocery, located at the harbor. The enticing aroma of fresh seafood greeted us as we walked in. Blair introduced us to their famous seafood salads.

Maritime Museum

San Diego Maritime Museum - Star of IndiaI passed by this place many times without giving it a second glance. It is in Downtown San Diego’s Embarcadero and right in front of the waterfront park.

During this last visit I decided to venture inside and I was pleasantly surprised. At first glance, it looks to be very small with few exhibits indoors, but the real value is outside with several ships and submarines on display.

The museum hosts a collection of 11 vessels with the main building being a converted ferryboat. Some of those ships are active and provide short cruises for visitors.

Pirates Dinner Adventure

null

We started by posing for a photo op behind the helm of a ship. You can pick some props from a basket – mainly different style captain and pirate hats - and be as serious or as silly as you like. You get to see the result at your table and decide whether to buy it – no pressure. The main reception hall is large and it has 2 bars and a gift shop. While you wait, you are served appetizers (included in the admission price).

Once inside, you will come face to face with a huge replica of an 18th-century Spanish galleon anchored in a 250,000-gallon indoor lagoon. The seats are arranged stadium-style around this stage, so everyone can have a good view of the action.
