Journey to a Hidden Oasis: Hiking the 49 Palms Trail
The 49 Palms Oasis trail is one of Joshua Tree National Park’s best-kept secrets. This secluded oasis is challenging to get to, but the rewarding views and peaceful atmosphere make it well worth the effort.
The trail begins on the northern edge of the park near Twentynine Palms, California.
Since the hike starts outside the official entrance, there is no fee to begin.
The trailhead has a large parking lot and some basic restrooms, but from there, you are on your own. There are no facilities on the trail or at the oasis.

The Hike Up to the Oasis
The 49 Palms Trail is a moderately strenuous hike. The first part is a steady, uphill climb with an elevation gain of 350 feet, definitely not a leisurely stroll. On a hot day, the sun can be intense. Fortunately, the path is well-maintained, with steps in some spots to assist with the climb.
Along the way, you'll encounter incredible rock formations that look like giant sculptures carved by the wind and water. You'll also see hardy desert plants and panoramic views of the stark, beautiful landscape. The vibrant red barrel cacti are a particular highlight, adding a splash of color to the pale desert.
After climbing steadily for about 45 minutes, you'll reach the summit. From there, the
trail begins a welcome descent. Seeing the tops of palm trees peeking over the hills is a hopeful sign that your journey is nearing its end.
Interestingly, Joshua Tree is not a single, giant park but rather the convergence of two distinct desert ecosystems: the Mojave and the Colorado. The 49 Palms Oasis is located in the Mojave Desert portion, which is characterized by the iconic Joshua trees and cooler temperatures at higher elevations.
A Green Valley in the Desert
It's a surreal and refreshing feeling to discover a lush, green valley in the middle of a desolate desert. The palms are naturally nestled around a spring, surrounded by huge boulders.
To get down to the spring, you have to scramble over these rocks. It's a bit tricky, but it's part of the fun! The oasis is a truly unique sight and a welcome reward for weary hikers.
Traveler Tip: Go early! This is a popular spot, and arriving in the morning helps you avoid both the midday heat and the biggest crowds, allowing you to enjoy the serenity of the oasis.
Taking a Break and Enjoying the View
The entire hike took us about three hours in total: an hour to get to the oasis, an hour to head back, and a full hour spent at the oasis itself.
Our reward for the grueling hike was a picnic lunch. We sat on the rocks and savored our sandwiches and drinks. Although the place was crowded with other hikers, we managed to find a somewhat secluded spot for our lunch.
“This trail is tough, but the payoff is incredible. We went in the spring, and the wildflowers were blooming along the trail, which made the views even more spectacular. Just remember to bring way more water than you think you need.”

Safety and Tips for Hikers
This hike is considered strenuous, so if you have a heart condition or uncontrolled diabetes, you should avoid it. It’s also crucial to take safety precautions. Bring at least a gallon of water per person, wear sturdy hiking shoes, and pack a hat and sunscreen. Always check the weather forecast before you go. This hike is best done in the cooler months, from October to May. Avoid hiking in the intense heat of the summer.
The trail is home to many desert creatures, and you may spot lizards, snakes, and even bighorn sheep. Always be aware of your surroundings and do not feed the wildlife. Stay on the marked trail, as going off-trail can harm fragile desert plants and put you at risk. The 49 Palms Oasis is a fragile place. Please do not leave anything behind. Pack out all your trash to help preserve this beautiful natural gem.
