Frontierland transports visitors back to the adventurous era of trailblazers and pioneers in the American Wild West. The majestic "Rivers of America" runs through this land, providing a scenic backdrop where authentic steamboats, sailships, rafts, and canoes gracefully glide. This land is a hub for both high-speed thrills and tranquil relaxation.
Over the years, our family has gathered valuable knowledge about the Disney parks. We are excited to share these insights to ensure you make the most of the unique attractions and dining found here.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is one of Frontierland's most popular attractions, affectionately known as the "wildest ride in the wilderness."
This thrilling roller coaster takes you on a fast-paced journey through a cursed mine filled with bat caves, falling rocks, and waterfalls. As your train speeds along the track, it zips under a waterfall and dodges a falling boulder. Despite being a mild coaster without inversions, it offers exciting twists and turns perfect for intermediate thrill-seekers. This ride is available via the Lightning Lane service (part of Genie+). Read more about Lightning Lane services here.
Important Update: Please check the Disneyland app for operational status. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has been undergoing an extensive refurbishment and may have closures or reduced operating hours into 2026.
User Comment (Source: Theme Park Review): "Even after all these years, Big Thunder is still a blast. It’s the perfect blend of thrills without being too scary, and riding it at night, when the whole mountain is lit up, is an entirely different and amazing experience."
Mark Twain Riverboat
Enjoy a relaxing 12-minute journey on the magnificent, 105-foot-long Mark Twain Riverboat, an authentic steam-powered vessel. This boat, reminiscent of a real Mississippi dock steamer, allows passengers to explore its three levels while enjoying scenic views of the Rivers of America, including the shoreline of Pirate's Lair.
Fun Fact: The Mark Twain Riverboat's flagpole also functions as a lightning rod. Walt Disney insisted that the boat be a historically accurate, fully functional steam-powered vessel, ensuring its authenticity as an American riverboat.
Sailing Ship Columbia
The Sailing Ship Columbia is a full-scale replica of the Columbia Rediviva, the first American ship to circumnavigate the globe. It offers a 12-minute sail through the Rivers of America, typically operating only during peak seasons. Below deck, passengers can explore a nautical museum showcasing the detailed life of the 1787 crew. Exhibits include the galley, pantry, dry stores, sickbay, and quarters for various crew members, offering a unique glimpse into maritime history.
Pirate’s Lair on Tom Sawyer Island
Take a short raft ride across the Rivers of America to reach this massive artificial island. The island features structures, rope bridges, and dark caves referencing Mark Twain's characters from "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer," now heavily themed with elements from the Pirates of the Caribbean films. ![]()
Quick Tips: The island has restrooms but no other services. Wear sturdy shoes as they will get dirty climbing through the caves and paths. This is an ideal spot for children (and energetic adults) to run, climb, and burn off energy, as it is self-guided exploration rather than a traditional line-up ride.
Kids and adults alike can enjoy adventures by climbing the elevated fort, exploring the dark Injun Joe's Cave, and pretending to be Tom Sawyer or Captain Jack Sparrow.
Frontierland Dining
Frontierland offers excellent quick-service dining options, along with many snack stations and unique shopping opportunities.
The Golden Horseshoe
This old-fashioned saloon-style dining hall is a great spot to stop for a quick, hearty meal. It is a quick-service location that offers American fare, including fish and chips, chicken breast nuggets, chili cheese fries, and chili served in a bread bowl. The live comedic entertainment show, the Laughing Stock Co., was permanently discontinued in 2022, but the saloon remains an atmospheric place to dine. ![]()
Rancho Del Zocalo
You can enjoy a delicious Mexican meal at this cafeteria-style restaurant, which offers tacos, burritos, and enchiladas, with daily specials. Due to its spacious and beautiful outdoor seating, it is one of the most popular quick-service dining spots in the park. Don't forget to ask for the secret menu item, the hidden burrito (also known as the Zocalo).
Upscale Dining Near Frontierland
Blue Bayou Restaurant
For a more refined dining experience, head to Blue Bayou, which is adjacent to Frontierland in New Orleans Square. Enjoy a meal inside the Pirates of the Caribbean ride in perpetual twilight. The romantic atmosphere and first-rate Cajun-Creole-inspired food make for a highly memorable meal. On our last visit, we enjoyed the Rack of Lamb and Veggie Pasta, both of which were perfect. Other good choices include Surf and Turf and Filet Mignon. Crucially, Blue Bayou now serves alcoholic beverages, including wine and specialty cocktails, unlike in the past. Reservations are mandatory.
