My wife and I recently enjoyed a wonderful three-day escape to Del Mar, California. This charming coastal town, located just 20 miles north of San Diego, offered us a perfect mix of relaxation, adventure, and cultural experiences. Here's a glimpse into our delightful journey.
A Little History
Del Mar, meaning "by the sea" in Spanish, has a rich history dating back to the late 19th century. The town was established in 1885 by Theodore M. Loop, a railroad official who fell in love with the area’s picturesque beauty.
Interesting Fact: The town's name, chosen by Loop's wife, Ella, was inspired by a popular poem of the time called "The Fight for Paso Del Mar."
Over the years, Del Mar has evolved from a small seaside village into a popular destination known for its stunning beaches, upscale living, and vibrant community. Its historical charm remains intact, making it a unique spot on the Southern California coast.
Things to Do in Del Mar
Del Mar offers a plethora of activities for visitors of all interests. We started our trip with a leisurely stroll through the charming downtown area, filled with boutique shops, art galleries, and delightful cafes. The Del Mar Plaza provided a perfect spot for shopping and dining with an ocean view.
Del Mar is renowned for its Racetrack, a historic venue that hosts thoroughbred horse racing during the summer and fall.
The racetrack, which opened in 1937, was founded by a group of Hollywood celebrities, including Bing Crosby and Pat O’Brien. It quickly became a glamorous hotspot, attracting the elite of the era. We are not into racing, so we skipped this attraction.

Beaches
The beaches in Del Mar are nothing short of spectacular. We spent significant time at Del Mar City Beach, known for its golden sands and gentle surf. It's an excellent spot for swimming, sunbathing, and beachcombing.
We noticed prominent signs dividing the beach into distinct areas. This is a great idea to separate swimmers from surfers.
The beach is family-friendly, and we enjoyed watching families and surfers alike make the most of the waves.
Another beautiful beach we visited was the quieter North Beach, also known as "Dog Beach," where dogs are allowed to roam freely. It was heartwarming to see so many happy pups playing in the surf.
Community Center Events
Del Mar's community center is a hub of activity, hosting various events throughout the year. It is probably unique as it sits right on the beach.
We were lucky to catch one of the "Summer Twilight Concerts." The live music, combined with the sound of crashing waves and the stunning sunset, created an unforgettable atmosphere. These concerts are a beloved tradition and attract both locals and visitors.
It was mesmerizing to watch thousands of people standing, gazing at the sunset while swaying to the music.
The community center also hosts yoga classes, art workshops, and seasonal festivals, offering something for everyone.
Sea Cliff Coastal Trail
During our trip we accidentally discovered the stunning Sea Cliff Coastal Trail. We were trying to find a shortcut to the beach from our hotel and ended up at the train tracks.
This trail offers a perfect blend of scenic beauty, invigorating exercise, and a close-up view of the rugged coastline that makes Del Mar so special.
This picturesque trail winds along the cliffs of Del Mar, providing breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and the dramatic coastline. The path is well-maintained and suitable for hikers of all levels, making it an accessible adventure for families, couples, and solo explorers alike.
As we walked along the trail, we were treated to panoramic views of the ocean. The sight of waves crashing against the rocky cliffs below was mesmerizing, and we often paused to take it all in.
We also spotted a variety of seabirds, including pelicans and seagulls, soaring above the cliffs.

Trailhead and Access: The Sea Cliff Coastal Trail can be accessed from several points in Del Mar, with one of the most popular starting points near the Powerhouse Park and Community Center.
Parking can be a challenge, so we walked from our hotel instead.
Tip: While the trail is generally safe, it's important to stay on designated paths and be cautious near the cliff edges, as they can be unstable
Nearby Hikes
For nature lovers, Del Mar offers some fantastic hiking opportunities. We embarked on a hike at the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, just a short drive from Del Mar. The reserve boasts miles of trails that offer breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and unique Torrey Pine trees. The Guy Fleming Trail was our favorite, with its diverse scenery and moderate difficulty.

Another nearby hiking spot is Crest Canyon Park, which offers a more secluded experience with beautiful canyon views and serene trails.

Here’s a guide to dining in this charming coastal town.
Poseidon Restaurant
Poseidon Restaurant is a quintessential beachfront dining experience. Located right on the sand at Del Mar City Beach, it offers stunning ocean views and a relaxed, elegant ambiance.
The menu focuses on fresh seafood, with popular dishes including the grilled mahi-mahi, seared scallops, and their famous clam chowder. For those preferring land-based fare, there are excellent steak and chicken options.
The outdoor patio is the highlight, where you can enjoy your meal while listening to the waves crash. Poseidon is perfect for a romantic dinner, a casual lunch, or even a special brunch by the sea.
Coya Peruvian Secret
This unassuming restaurant offers a vibrant dining experience focusing on authentic Peruvian cuisine.
At first glance, the menu seemed ordinary, with offerings like Spare Ribs and Lamb Stew, but once you try it, the special blend of spices explodes in your mouth. The portions are also generous, so we shared a dish of Spare Ribs with a side of mashed potatoes.
While enjoying our meal, we listened to music by a talented guitarist.
We couldn’t decide on the dessert, so we ordered the Chocolate Bread Pudding and the Cuatro Leches. Both were delicious.
The service was a little slow, but the waitress made up for it with a friendly smile.
Jake's Del Mar
Jake's Del Mar is another beachfront favorite, known for its relaxed vibe and Pacific-inspired menu. Located just steps from the beach, it’s an excellent spot for enjoying a meal with a view.
The menu offers a mix of seafood, steaks, and salads. Standout dishes include the miso-glazed sea bass, ahi poke bowl, and their legendary Hula Pie for dessert.
Il Fornaio
For a taste of Italy, Il Fornaio in Del Mar is the place to be. This Italian restaurant offers an authentic dining experience focusing on traditional recipes and fresh ingredients.
The menu includes a wide range of pasta dishes, wood-fired pizzas, and classic Italian entrees. Favorites include the fettuccine alla Bolognese, margherita pizza, and the tiramisu.
