Our Route: Barham Ridge and Oak Trail to Robbers Roost Loop
We chose the Barham Ridge Trail and Oak Trail to Robbers Roost loop, a 4-mile hike that took us about three hours to complete. While the AllTrails app estimated two hours, we appreciated the extra time for breaks and photos.
The hike began on the Santiago Creek Trail, which features a scenic stream crossing with stepping stones. This shaded trail provides a peaceful start to the journey.
We took a detour to the Historic Dam Trail, where we admired a small dam that forms a pool and waterfall. After a brief pause, we continued counterclockwise along Santiago Creek Trail.
Interesting fact: The historic dam along the trail dates back to the early 20th century and played a role in local water management.
Trail Challenges and Scenic Highlights
From Santiago Creek Trail, we transitioned to the Oak Trail and then the Mountain Goat Trail. This trail is aptly named for its steep inclines and rugged terrain. The climb was challenging, but the panoramic views of the Villa Park Dam and the lush valley made it worthwhile.
At the top of the climb, we paused at a scenic overlook with breathtaking views of the surrounding hills and valleys. December's crisp air enhanced the vibrant colors of the landscape.
Continuing along Barham Ridge Trail, we passed several rest stops equipped with shaded benches and tables. These were perfect spots to rest, refuel, and hydrate.
Remember that the trails are shared with mountain bikers, so stay alert for cyclists, especially on descents.
Robbers Roost and the American Flag
One of the hike's most iconic features is Robbers Roost, a rocky outcrop accessible via the Anaheim Hills Trail. Just before reaching this section, we spotted an American flag marking the intersection of Barham Ridge Trail and Anaheim Hills Trail.
Robbers Roost offers commanding views of the Peralta Hills and Santiago Creek. The climb to the summit is steep but manageable, and the views from the top are spectacular. It's an excellent spot to rest and enjoy a snack.
Finishing the Loop
The return journey connected back to the Oak Trail, which we followed to the Wilderness Trail and finally back to the trailhead. The combination of shaded paths and open ridges created a varied and engaging experience.
Hiker Tips
- Bring Water: Even in December, the exposed ridge trails can feel hot under the midday sun.
- Wear Sun Protection: A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are essential for the sunny sections.
- Start Early: Morning hikes are cooler and less crowded.
- Watch for Bikes: The trails are shared, and mountain bikers can appear suddenly on descents.
- Check Trail Maps: The park has many intersecting trails, so bring a map or use an app like AllTrails.
