Trailhead and Parking
We began our journey from the Borrego Parking Lot. You can find this entrance at 26701 Portola Parkway, Foothill Ranch, CA 92610.
Travelers can also use an alternative entrance at the Glenn Ranch Road Parking Lot. This lot is located at 27901 Glenn Ranch Rd., Trabuco Canyon, CA 92679, and connects to additional trailheads within the system.
Parking at either lot currently costs $3. You must pay this at the automated kiosks before heading out.
Tip: The automated kiosks accept credit cards and small bills, but they can occasionally be finicky. Bringing exact change is a smart backup plan.
Tall sycamores and oak trees welcomed us with cooling shade as we stepped onto the Borrego Trail. The path winds gently through the canyon, following the line of a seasonal creek. We crossed the water several times using stepping stones. In a few areas, we had to wade through shallow water to continue.

Warning: Dogs are strictly prohibited in Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park to protect local wildlife. Please leave your pets at home.
Spring transforms this landscape into a painter’s palette. Vibrant yellow mustard flowers line the trails and dot the hillsides, creating a stunning natural display.
Wildlife is abundant here. We spotted rabbits darting through the underbrush and squirrels racing along the path. Birds chirped melodiously from the branches above. The serenity of the area makes it easy to forget that suburban neighborhoods are only a few miles away.
Midway through the hike, we arrived at a clearly marked junction at Mustard Road. A short, uphill detour led us to the official Red Rock Canyon Trail. This is arguably the most unforgettable section of the park.
The final stretch unveils the park’s crown jewel. You will see dramatic red rock formations sculpted by erosion over millions of years. These striking sandstone structures resemble miniatures of the famous formations found in Utah or Arizona. They offer a rare geological surprise in Southern California.
Interesting Fact: The red sandstone in Red Rock Canyon is part of the Sespe Formation. It was deposited approximately 20 to 40 million years ago during the Eocene and Oligocene epochs.
User Comment: "This is such a hidden gem in the OC. The hike is flat and easy for kids until the very end, and the payoff with the red rocks is incredible. It feels like you teleported to Sedona for an hour." — Sarah J., AllTrails Reviewer
While the views are beautiful, it is essential to stay alert. The park is known for its mountain lion habitat. Although encounters are rare, hikers must remain aware of their surroundings.
Safety First: Mountain lions inhabit this area. Always hike in groups, stay on marked trails, and keep small children close. Avoid hiking at dawn or dusk when wildlife is most active. If you encounter a mountain lion, do not run. Stand tall, wave your arms to appear larger, and speak firmly while backing away slowly.
After soaking in the views and enjoying a snack, we retraced our steps along the same route. The entire journey completed a satisfying 4.2-mile round trip.
The Borrego Trail to Red Rock Canyon offers a delightful mix of scenery for families, photographers, and outdoor enthusiasts. It provides mild challenges and a dash of the unexpected.
