West Ridge Trail to Top of the World Hike: A Scenic Adventure
The West Ridge Trail, a 4.5-mile out-and-back route in Aliso Viejo, California, is celebrated for its breathtaking vistas and year-round accessibility. This moderately challenging hike attracts bird watchers, hikers, and mountain bikers, creating a vibrant spot for outdoor enthusiasts.
Getting Started
Parking is available in a nearby residential neighborhood at 65 Hollyleaf Road, Aliso Viejo. Though part of the Aliso and Woods Canyon Wilderness Park, the trailhead lacks an official parking lot, so plan accordingly.
The trail begins with steady inclines and limited shade, making sunscreen, hats, and ample water essential. Starting our hike at 10 a.m., we felt the sun's intensity, but the occasional ocean breeze brought welcome relief.

Trail Highlights
From the outset, the West Ridge Trail offers spectacular views. Surrounded by rolling hills, hikers are treated to awe-inspiring ocean vistas as they ascend towards Alta Laguna Park. Though the lack of shade adds to the challenge, the scenery makes every step worthwhile.
Upon reaching the Top of the World, the panoramic views are simply stunning. This iconic Laguna Beach spot offers vistas spanning the ocean and canyons below. Nearby, Alta Laguna Park provides clean restrooms, shaded benches, and a playground, making it an excellent spot for a break or a family outing.
Interesting Fact: The "Top of the World" is one of the highest points in Laguna Beach, offering views of Catalina Island on clear days!
Hiking Down to Laguna Beach
Feeling adventurous, we descended to Main Beach in Laguna Beach via Park Avenue, as no direct trail connects the Top of the World to the ocean. Though initially manageable, the steady descent strained our knees, but the stunning ocean views made it worthwhile.
Once at Main Beach, we enjoyed a Mediterranean lunch at Adonis Restaurant and topped it off with creamy delights from Chantilly Ice Cream Laguna Beach. Both spots accept cash only, so come prepared.
Traveler Tip: If you're planning to walk down to Laguna Beach, wear comfortable shoes with good cushioning to ease the impact of the descent.
Returning to the Trailhead
After soaking in Laguna Beach’s vibrant atmosphere, we faced the challenge of returning to the trailhead. Instead of hiking uphill, we took an Uber—a convenient and much-needed reprieve after our trek.
