Experience the Flavors and Vistas of Sonoma Wine Country

Exterior view of Cline Cellars tasting room After a refreshing morning in the redwoods, our tour departed for Sonoma. Our guide, Mike, utilized the drive to educate us on the different wine varietals and the unique geography of the Sonoma valleys.

Highlights

First Stop: Cline Cellars
Second Stop: Larson Family Winery
Lunch in Historic Sonoma
Final Stop: Jacuzzi Family Vineyards
The Return: Marin Headlands

First Stop: Cline Cellars

Our first wine stop was Cline Cellars. The main building resembles an old plantation house and is surrounded by sprawling vineyards. A large fish pond on the side provides entertainment for non-wine drinkers, and there is also a fascinating California Mission museum on the premises.

Visitors can sample various wines in a relaxed setting. While individual tastes vary, the grounds are undeniably beautiful and worth exploring regardless of your wine preferences.

Second Stop: Larson Family Winery

The next stop was the Larson Family Winery. This winery has the rustic charm of a converted barn and is famous for its friendly Labrador dogs who greet visitors upon arrival.

The dogs are a massive hit with families, providing fun for children who can play games in the backyard while the adults sample the flights. I found the wines here to be above average with a few standouts; I especially recommend trying their Merlot.

Lunch in Historic Sonoma

Outdoor dining table with wine and food in Sonoma For lunch, we stopped in the town of Sonoma. It is a lovely, quiet town anchored by a historic downtown plaza, the largest of its kind in California. You will find the beautiful colonial-style City Hall building at the very center of the square.

Traveler Tip: If you are visiting in the summer, the plaza offers ample shade for a picnic. Pick up supplies at the Sonoma Cheese Factory or Vella Cheese Company nearby.

On three sides of the plaza, there is a wide selection of boutiques and restaurants. I enjoyed a delicious salad at "The Girl & The Fig," a highly rated local favorite known for its country food with a French passion.

After lunch, we met our guide at the local cheese factory. Here, you can taste a selection of artisanal cheeses and fudge. I also treated myself to a tasty dessert of gelato before we moved on.

Final Stop: Jacuzzi Family Vineyards

Stone architecture of Jacuzzi Family Vineyards Our last stop was at the Jacuzzi Family Vineyards, located right across the street from our first stop, Cline Cellars. We learned that the same parent company owns both wineries, but they differ significantly in style.

Jacuzzi is more upscale, situated in a stunning stone building modeled after the family home in Italy. They offer both wine and olive oil tastings. The tasting host was well-versed in the specific notes of the wines and the Jacuzzi family history.

Did You Know? The Jacuzzi family is indeed famous for the hot tub. Roy Jacuzzi invented the water pump and designed a very light propeller. The winery pays homage to this history while serving excellent Italian varietals like Sangiovese and Barbera.

The history lessons were a great bonus, and the wines were a hit. I liked several of their offerings, and the prices were reasonable. Don't forget to visit the tower, which commands sweeping views of the valley and the hills.

The Return: Marin Headlands

View of Golden Gate Bridge from Marin Headlands On the way back to San Francisco, we drove through the beautiful bayside town of Sausalito and up to the Marin Headlands.

I always pass under the headlands when driving over the Golden Gate Bridge, but it never occurred to me to go up there. Now I know what I was missing. The view of the bridge and the city skyline from above is breathtaking and offers one of the best photo opportunities in the state.

Overall, I really enjoyed my trip with Best Bay Area Tours. I only have one small critique: the time allotted for each stop felt a bit long. We finished wine tasting and exploring quickly, then had to wait for the van to pick us up. However, for a stress-free day of nature and wine, it was a fantastic choice.

Traveler Comment: "The combination of the quiet majestic woods in the morning and the relaxing wine in the afternoon is perfect. Make sure to bring layers, as the woods can be chilly even in summer!" — Sarah L., TripAdvisor
